Service Project: 6 Hours

This was my 3rd time working with the two girls. I wanted to bring ひらがな flashcards, but I couldn't get into my closet. I better be sure to bring them next time. The highlight of this lesson was the fact that both girls sat and intently listened to me read to them a Japanese book. Although they probably had no idea what I was saying, at least they didn't reject hearing Japanese. I think slowly but surely they are getting used to me being around as well as hearing Japanese. I'm excited for them.

Service Project: 4 Hours

Today was the second day of my service project. It was the first time Grace used ここ "koko" when pointing to a picture. Her mom and I were both so stoked! One, she said it, and two, it was in the right context! Not only that, she no longer tells me nooooooo when I give her the Japanese name for items/animals. She'll just listen instead.

I'm so glad we're making progress. Although it's baby steps, at least it's baby steps towards the right direction.

I enjoy teaching the girls and can't wait til they're able to speak Japanese!

Service Project: 2 Hours

I believe learning your heritage language is important. So, I decided to teach Japanese as my service project. The two girls that are part of this project are 1.5 (Faith) and 2.5 years old (Grace).

Today was my first day. It was a bit tough because the girls needed to not only adjust to me, but also adjust to hearing another language. And what I mean by that is....Grace already knows that the name for purple, is purple...so when I said むらさき "murasaki" she said nooooooo purple. -___-" So I said, yes...purple...むらさき!

So...I left letting her mom know that it's ok to use English when teaching Japanese. So if she says purple, say yes purprle...むらさき so that she doesn't feel like she said something wrong, but instead adding another word to her vocabulary.
